    I feel your pain, friend. There is nothing worst than playing with people who won't play by the rules. If you can't get these people to at least alternate playing the real rules and their "house" rules then you need to get out and some people who will play properly. Find a local convention or game club or post an opponents wanted ad with Craig's List or Boardgame Geek.

Calmly read the rule and state the reason for your interpretation--be tactful and don't make an argument out of it. Allow your opponent to state his/her case. If your opponent cleary doesn't grasp it, I would suggest finding other people to play against.

While I know how you feel, and I can agree. Sometimes homebrew rules are just more fun. I say just go with it. Everybody is playing by the same rules, modified or not, correct? Then it is still far. Especially if the rule changes are so minute. Now if they made a new rule that changes the very core of the game... ...Well that depends if the new rule made the game more fun or not. My friends and I have a tendency to play a game a few times, then create a plethora of new, custom made things to go with the games. You should see what happened to "Sorry!" Never have I thought a T-rex and nuclear bomb would be involved :p
