I love my kingsnake. She is extremely docile and tolerant, however I have heard that other kingsnakes can be quite flighty as babies. Cornsnakes and milksnakes are also great starter snakes. When you pick a species, you can ask the breeder for a more calm, (for lack of a better word) sociable individual.

Ball pythons are picky eaters and do not make good first snakes as pets. If you want to get into the world of reptiles please do some research first and make sure you're prepared to feed frozen then thawed mice or even rats depending on what type you choose. The best beginner snakes are colubrids. Cornsnakes or milksnakes, or even some rat snakes but they do get pretty big. If you choose a ball python they are great too but they get up to 4 feet long and are pretty big. However, most are docile. If you go that route buy from a trusted breeder or pet shop. Do not buy a problem feeder and do not buy from someone who says they are eating well as it may mean they've had problems snakes before. Ball pythons and colubrids can't really hurt.

my ball python is pretty awesome...never bitten, and he won't get too big...and yes they are very docile animals...

A cornsnake is the best pet stanke. Its easy to look after, grow 4 to 6 feet and love being handled. they are not poisenous and don't bite, (unless they feel threatened, obviously.) They eat once a week ish, depending on how old they are, and only eat mice, pinkies. Anyway all the detail is on this website, www.thecornsnake.co.uk

Ball pythons are very nice. They get about 3-5 feet. when there smaller(like 2.1/2 feet) they can stay in a 20/30 tank. When they are adults they need a 40 gallon tank, or you could just start out with a 40 gallon tank to save money. You feed them about once a week. Don't feed them in their tank because if you do then they might btie your hand next time you put it in because they think your holding food, and they aren't nice when it comes to food. feed it in a seperate container, and put the mouse(fuzzies when the snake is smaller, rats when they are adult) in the container first. they need a water bowl. two hiding spots(one in basking area, one in cooler area) Two aren't neccessary, but highly recomended. Put a heat light on one side(basking area) and a heat pad under the bedding(good beddings=aspin, reptile carpet, or even newspaper(never newspaper with color though(comics))). and ofcourse a metal screen top, with clips to lock it down unless the snake is still under a a foot and 1/2. temperture needs to be 80-85, basking area needs to be 90-95. At night, the temperture shouldn't drop below 75. Sounds expensive, but not too bad actually. I got my python for $40, tank for $25, heat light (including bulb) for $25, if bedding is newspaper, its free, reptile carpet or aspin is no more than $10. hideouts you could make or spend $10 for each one. water bowl like $1. And also either get a water bowl that the snake could soak in, or let it soak in shallow warm water in the tub or large container a few days a week. So that should give you an idea on the care of a ball python, hope this helps. Go google them too, don't trust what random people on yahoo answers say :] Oh and that guy that said ball pythons don't make first good pets is wrong, go ask anyone who has or knows well about snakes. They aren't picky, but sometimes just do not eat, some go 22 months without eating. Corn snakes usually get bigger than ball pythons.

Snakes do NOT make good pets. At some point it will try to eat you. That's just the way they are. You'll find it wrapped around your neck or trying to swallow your big toe. It will hide in your toilet and - I don't even want to think about what it will do. Get some fish.
