What to feed a little lizard caught in the park?

I caught a lizard what do I feed it?

  • I caught a lizard, what should I feed it? I live in La Jolla, CA (San Diego) near UCSD. What type can it be?

  • Answer:

Let it go. It could be a lot of things, if you don't know what species it is you will not feed it properly and it will die. It will be much happier in the wild. If you want a pet reptile, research a captive bred species and provide an appropriate habitat and food.

Lizards always enjoy some nice crickets. But I think you should let it go because it will be stressed and unhappy being stuck in a cage for the rest of it's life. It can also be carrying parasites. Also, wash your hands after holding it. You never know what diseases it can be carrying. 90% of reptiles carry a disease called Salmonella and can easily be spread to people. It's usually spread by not washing your hands after handling and not washing out the bite if you get bitten by any reptile.

release it. you're gonna feed it the wrong things and you're gonna make it die. harsh way to put it but if you don't know what it is then put it back.

without and ID its impossible to say, most are insectivors but it could thrive on only 1 type of insect also it could be a protected species and be illegal to capture or keep. i would put it back since you dont know even the basic like what it is, what to feed it, temperature, UVB light etc. it will likely die in your care without knowing these things

its best that you do let it go the lizard being wild caught could have parasites. i know you mean well but wild reptiles and other animals should be left in the wild. if in time you choose a reptile as a pet please do your research and please never release any captive reptile in to the wild.

Royal Constrictor

it is probably either a fence lizard or alligator lizard.(i live in southern california too) from my past experiences, i have never been able to keep them alive, it is very difficult, but i am not going to tell you to let it go if you dont want to, so i know they like crickets and make sure you supply them with fresh water!! good luck!! (dont be disappointed if you cant take care of them, they really arent suitable pets!!)

Just because you have said where you live doesnt give away what kind of lizard it is. If you are going to keep it make sure you are confident in being able to take care of it correcly lizards that are born and raised in the wild are much better left in the wild. Where they can hunt and eat the bugs and parasites that appeal to them.

I recommend some leafy vegetables. Make him a nice salad. Also, treat him to some hot dogs and dark chocolate!
