What is a nice and inexpensive hotel in Paris?

What should i know (words) when reading menu in Paris? What is it like having breakfast at a hotel in Paris?

  • The hotel i am staying at provides me with a free breakfast...i was wondering what types of food do the have? Also is water free in all restaurants??

  • Answer:

Breakfasts in France are pretty light compared to the States. There will be no pancakes and waffles and certaintly no sausage or bacon. (nothing salty and no meat for breakfast) The French tend to drink a cup of coffee (and not the mega sized cups like in US but a small espresso sized cup) or tea and have a piece of toast with jam or maybe a croissant or another pastry like a pain aux raisins or a pain au chocolat. At the hotel I would expect to see these things and maybe cereal (or maybe not) depends on how typically French the hotel you're staying at is and how much it caters towards tourists. When at a restaurant look for the "menu du jour" with specials as said before these have multiple dishes (usually a vegetable/side dish, the main dish and maybe a salad) and are cheaper. Also it's a good way to try something new as these are often traditional French dishes or dishes the restaurant specializes in.

Menus generally have two areas : - menus themselves: one, two or three dishes sometimes with a drink included. This is generally the less expensive choice. - dishes "à la carte": individual dishes. In some restaurants, they cost the price of a menu! Wines and drinks are sometimes on a separate menu. Wines can sometimes be taken in half bottles or individual glasses. A typical breakfast is generally made of coffee/tea/chocolate plus some fresh bread/croissants Some hotels probably serve more elaborate breakfsasts (eggs, bacon and so on) If you want an unusual breakfast, try "Au Bon Pain Quotidien" http://www.lepainquotidien.com/ They serve an extensive brunch till midday with almost everything you can imagine: ham, salad, salmon, pastries and of course their excellent bread. Tapwater is free in all restaurants. Bread is generally free too.

Crepes are good. You should find those just about anywhere. Crossaints are great (not at all like Pillsbury's). Mostly stick to pastries. Water is not always free, but make sure you get it bottled... "Je prends..." means "I would like... to eat." "Je veux..." "I would like..." "Il me faut..." "I would need..." "Tu peux...?" "Can you...?" "Tu me rapportes...?" "Will you bring me...?" "Encore du..." "More of..." "Oui, j'en veux." "Yes, I'd like some." "Je n'en veux plus." "I don't want more." "Merci." "Thanks." *If you want more, just ask...
