Has anyone here been to Salvador, Bahia in Brazil?

  • If so what was it like? Tell me the good and the bad.

  • Answer:

I went there for five days with my wife and mother-in-law in tow. I liked it. The pros were the vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture, great seafood, cheap alcohol, and awesome scenery with those Brazilian bikini’s, and nice historical building and cathedrals. The cons were the beaches were over-crowded, vendors were constantly bothering you to sell their wares, and most of all the hotels are not up to the US/Mexican/Caribbean beach standard. My advice is to go, but be careful booking your hotel. Brazilians really don’t know what a four or five star hotel is like. Assume the hotel/reviewers are lying and subtract 1 to 1.5 stars from their rating, so read the guide book closely. You should also consider spending three days at Praia do Forte, which is a really neat beach community next to a sea turtle reserve. It’s about 20-30 Km north of the airport. Also, you should remember that Salvador is a large city of over 2 million people, so it lacks the tropical beach paradise appeal. Pauly
