Can I use the normal "composite" RCA cable to connect "component" RCA i/o?

  • RCA Component video cables are costlier. Hence can I use my spare RCA composite cable to connect the DVD component OUT to the TV component IN?

  • Answer:

You can but you run the risk of degrading the signal, especially if you're running it more than a few feet.

All video cables are 75 ohms. Component cables are simply 3 identical length Composite cables in a bundle, but with red/green/blue markings. So if you have 3 identical composite cables - you can use them for standard def component cables. HIGH DEF: Here is where it gets tricky. "Composite" cables only have to work with standard def signals. Progressive video (480i) and HD Video (720, 1080) go to much higher frequencies. So you do not want to use this trick for the output of a Progressive scan DVD player or for a BluRay or HD-DVD player.

It will work just fine. The electrons don't know the difference between cables. FYI monoprice.com sells them for pretty cheap.
