How to buy a good Speaker System ...?

  • I want to buy a speaker system ( 2.1 channel ) ... how to judge the specifications?eg... I can understand power output( I means the maximum volume that can be achieved right? correct ...show more

  • Answer:

You cannot usually look at the specs and decide if a speaker will sound good or not. Can you read the ingredients on a can of food or ice-cream and decide which brand and flavor will taste better? No. You have to either go listen to the speakers with music you are familiar with or find a review. And ignore "POWER". The power number on a speaker is the max power and this is sometimes bumped up to impress young-and-dumb customers. In truth - you only drive a speaker with a fraction of that power. In general: * Only consider speakers from a company that makes and sells speakers as it's main business. This means to skip Sony, Philips, Samsung, etc. * Look at the woofer. The bigger the driver, the better it can usually perform. But the more power it will take to run it. Hope this helps.

The operative word in my response will bear down on the word judgement. "How to judge them." I would say their is no agreed upon one way to know how to buy a good speaker system. At best you will find a variation of the same theme, but exactness is not likely ever. To my point, many will criticize Bose for not publishing specs but if you look at the responses to your questions specs are dismissed or not a vital decision point. You did raise a question around signal to noise ratios, it is a reference statistic pointing to the quality or purity of the sound or signal against background noise in a perfect situation within the internal workings of the device. The best connection types are clear and fast, probably toslink optical connection will be among the best. Instead of maximum value as a bench mark, better to understand maximum clarity, effort versus results and bang for buck. Maximum clarity is possible but that does not automatically mean the best clarity. If you have listened to Creative speakers, the maximum clarity from that brand may be teased out of them but they can only do but so much because of the quality of the crossover within the speaker cabinet. When you apply the concept of maximum clarity you want to think amp and DAC (digital audio converter). An amp will magnify everything, no different to the ear than a set of binoculars is to the eyes, in this case it brings close sound that is far away, but your speakers must match the nimbleness of amplified power or the sound quality will stumble, or get muddy on the low end, fuzzy on the high end. A digital audio converter will correct and clarify what is amped. It makes speech more articulate. If in your music a choir sings in the background a DAC will help the listener to clearly understand ever pronounced word or letters spelled out in context with the music. A DAC brings out details, the better the details the better the DAC. Think of it as the pronunciator. It pronounces eloquently audio. All speakers have inherent limitations, no one can add an amp and a DAC and make a speaker do something it was not designed to do, however, if what you believe is that the potential for more exists then the amp and DAC can maximize that potential. This may prove well worth the effort based on the results. Another words, from your hunch or educated guess, the effort to understand and improve should yield better results. I have a Bose Sounddock 10 inherent with Bose waveguide system is a lack of focused clarity. However, within the Sounddock 10 is an 8 inch subwoofer, and two middling speaker cones, I believe in this case two 4 inch cones from left to right. Using air pressure the waveguide tubing amplifies the sound, with the assist of a amp built into the box. The ingredients are in the cake, so to speak but it lacks a bonafide tweeter of some type. The effort on my part to understand the basics that the pressurized sound from the tubing comes out like a funnel cloud, is the inherent cause for a non-focused dispersion pattern. What happens is a sizzle sound on the top end. Bose has its own version of digital formula baked into the unit. What happens at times the mid range where vocals live can be distant from the rest of the music, in some cases out of context. Again, this is the effort on the side of the consumer to understand. To counter this would be to insert a digital audio converter linked into the Sounddock 10. An external sound card rather a device like the Audioengine D1 DAC. This a suitable device to give results that greatly improve the sonic character of what the Bose Sounddock should be. It corrects and clarifies in harmony with the internal organs of the Sounddock 10. Again, the DAC clarifies even crystalizes the sound quality. A noticeable improvement becomes the order of the day. Everything is within range and complete. It is much closer to audiophile quality than before by a country mile. A DAC in this case is better bang for the price of the unit. This understanding works for me on more than one device because I understand to some degree how things work, enough to make a qualified opinion with my money and not be lead by the nose by someone who knows nothing. I can apply this knowledge to my other equipment, by the way my musical recordings are at least 256kbp. The Bose Sounddock 10 sounds for the most part stellar. When you know how to get the most out of the what you have to work with, instead of chasing so called better spending thousands because of popularity or biased opinions that don't take into account the length and breadth of taking the best you have and making it better, then shame on them. Even if you agree to disagree, it doesn't make you a dolt, because you know something. In my opinion this is how best to judge a speaker and understand real world specifications. Best.

Forget about the specs when buying electronics, most manufacturer inflate there data to sell them. I would recommend you demo each speaker you are interested in with your own source of music and only listen to one song on each speakers. Your own ears are the best judge. Also by staying with name brands like Definitive Technology, Energy, JBL, Infinity, Klipsch, Martin Logan, Mirage and Polk audio to name a few will provide you clean sound. Hope this will help you our.
