One attractive place mentioned more frequently in recent years in tourism is Cumbuco. A little fishing village near the big city Fortaleza (2,447,409 of population). Cumbuco is best known for kitesurfing. You need Visas, they can take up to 3 months. The air fair will cost about $1000 each (if you shop around). Food and hotels are very expensive in Rio. I enjoyed my trip to Rio. I learned Portuguese with a easy book that had a CD, I recommend you learn some Portuguese.

You don't mention your departure point so can't say how much flights etc will be. Brazil is notorious for it's pick-pocketting, especially of tourists. But for an event like the world cup the police would be out in force. Nightlife/Beaches in Brazil are hard to beat, and are probably some of the best in the world.
