Is Brazil a dangerous country? If so, what areas?

  • I am going over there to work in the favelas mid this year and ive heard its quite dangerous there (due to crime).. how true that is, im not sure? Does anyone have any idea? ...show more

    Hi Aimee, I would not consider Brazil a dangerous country in general, however, there are some very dangerous parts in Brazil. Among them are some favelas, but not all of them. I recently spent some time in the favela "Dona Marta" which is in Botafogo (Rio de Janeiro) and I felt very safe. However, there are other favelas in and around Rio de Janeiro like Rocinha which is dangerous. There are also a number of dangerous favelas in Sao Paulo and other large Brazilian cities like Salvador de Bahia. Have a great time in Brazil. People are very friendly and I know that you will love it.

I just want to point out that it's not only dangerous in the favelas, you should stay alert everywhere you go. The only assurance we have is when leaving home, rather we'll be coming back or not, only God knows! The best way to describe crime statistics in Brazil is a matter of luck. If you're lucky, you will leave your home and return with no problem. Now, if it's your unlucky day anything can happen., you could get hit by a stray bullet, get robbed by gunpoint, pickpocketed, physically assaulted, kidnapped, over charged or other unpredictable incidents like gas explosions, building collapse, etc Most likely none of these bad events will happen to you however, i advise you to be careful and watch out for any danger at all times. Brazil is not paradise and as in any other country there are good people and individuals with bad intentions. Good luck and have fun!.

It was dangerous, but now it's safe (so so) because the army and outher kind of police is there to protect the population and face the crimes.
