Looking to build home theater system?

Where should I start when looking to build my own home theater system? What should be the first thing I get?

Answer:
You should audition speakers first as this is a HUGE variable in price. You want to look for a set of 5 monitor-style speakers. Plan on a self-powered subwoofer in the corner. If you can afford it - look into subwoofer brands like SVS or HSU Research. (Powerful and smooth bass is a secret to good home theater). The receiver: Look into the Onkyo TX-SR series. These have been winning awards for the last few years for the huge price/feature ratio. Plan on a BluRay player and dont forget to add in the cost of upgrading your TV service to HD. For cables go to www.bluejeanscables.com or www.monoprice.com (Do NOT let the salespeople sell you $100+ HDMI cables.)

>Where should I start when looking to build my own home theater system?< Your wallet. It's like the sign in the old speed shop where I used to buy parts when I built hot rods when I was a kid "Speed is money. How fast do you want to go" First you have to decide how much spare cash you have and determine your priorities. Pay the mortgage or buy a $10,000.00 70" TV? If I knew your budget I'd be able to help better. But offhand I'd say start with the TV then go from there. If you are on a severely limited budget you are screwed. You'll have to be content with a crapo system from Walmart. If you are reasonably well-heeled go with components from a shop that specializes in home theater and high end audio. Buy separate components, not "HTIB" - all in one systems. Actually now that I think about it; The place where any well thought out home theater starts is the room. It's a major part of the system. If the room is lousy the home theater experience will be lousy too. Imagine a movie theater set up in a laundromat. Well hell, now that I think about it some more you already started in the right place. You are asking questions instead of charging into it unprepared. High five! Poke around on the web some more and maybe subscribe to one of the home theater magazines. There are a lot of discussion groups and web sites for home theater, video and audio. You should be able to find them by doing a web search on key words: Home theater, high definition, high fidelity, home audio etc,. You seem reasonably intelligent, you didn't type in ALL CAPS and used good grammar and spelling. Also, there are a lot of numnuts on here. You'll have to sort them out. Don't listen to anyone who types in all caps, uses poor grammar and spelling, recommends Bose products or talks about "quads". Good luck.

Your first concern would be the budget you want to spend for your system. Second, the size of the room you will have for your home theater. Third, do you want a tv or a projector, keep in mind that projectors are more expensive than a tv and they require a dark room and the lamps only last around 2,000 hours. TV can range from say 32" to 65" and choices of Plasma, LCD or LED. Also noting that the LCD and LED tvs have problems with blur motion and to reduce the blur motion you need the faster refresh rate of 120HZ or the 240HZ which also brings the price of the tv. Fourth, you will need a receiver or a home theater in a box for sound. Your choice will be either a 5.1 or a 7.1 and the receiver is more flexible for adding other items to it, while home theater in a box is not. The Onkyo HT-S3300 is the entry level system which is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. Fourth, speakers if you do not get a home theater system, stay with name brands like JBL, Infinity, Energy, Klipsch etc. Last, would be a blu ray disc player. I would recommend you go online to Home Theater magazine and read the reviews on all equipment and the pro and cons of each technology of tvs. Hope this will help you out.

First you will need a receiver and speakers. You need the receiver to plug all of your devices into, and you need speakers to produce sound. After you buy those two components you can start looking for Blu Ray players and other items that you want connected to your system.

hi friend, 1. first decide how many speaker set u wanna use, its start from 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1, but among all 5.1 speaker set is ideal and highest running. 2. home theatre available in two form , 1- inbuilt amplifier 2. separate amplifier in built amplifier set use for low cost and limited sound effect while separate amplifier is use for hi-profile sound system, 3. in build amplifier cost - 5000rs to 25000 while separate amplifier cost 40000 to unlimited 4. sony and philips is welknown brand in in build ampifier while onkyo, bose, denon, jamo, yamaha is major player in separate amplifier-specker set. 5. rms(roots means squre) is ideal form to measure sound effect. 500 rms is sufficient for normal home theater room 15*12 size. 6. some point to consider : room size, speacker height and arrangement, original sound form cd, sitting arrangement etc make ur decision effective.
