Answer:
The Onkyo TX-SR606 is probably the best bang for the buck. The Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K would be a close second. Any lower and you are sacrificing some of the important features (like HDMI 1.3 repeating). http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR606&class=Receiver&p=i http://www.pioneerusa.com/PUSA/Products/HomeEntertainment/AV-Receivers/PioneerReceivers/ci.VSX-1018AH-K.Kuro

Onkyo is a great sounding stereo for a great price.

Harmon Kardon, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer and Onkyo. Have a look on amazon.com, and they have lots of choice, pretty good prices, and user reviews. PS. Completely avoid Bose. Over priced, over hyped, and under capable.

I would totally agree with the previous answers - all very good advice (especially about Bose..). A good, highly rated budget priced a/v receiver is the Onkyo SR-606. The retail is about £400, but shop around for deals.

well if I were you, I'll look into the 7.1 since it's the Blu ray standard. I completely agree with the first response concerning Bose... They are way overpriced and their system is made with parts made in Asia, a lot of parts are the same as that cheap sound system you can find at your local Walmart. Anyway, so since we're moving toward 7.1 and since it's a bit expensive, I would suggest not to spend a lot of money on your 5.1 surround sound system. Also did you know that if you hook your PS3 on your TV thru HDMI and then try to hook up your sound system to your Tv, then you will only get Stereo sound... I have a PS3 and my sound system is hooked up straight to the PS3 via Optical cable. Also the PS3 only allow 1 sound setting so I always find myself changing it from HDMI ( thru the TV ) and Optical ( thru the 5.1 sound system ) whether I watch a movie or play. Hope that help... by the way, my sound system is 5 years old, very cheap sound system "Durabrand", bought it for $100 at that time and it stills provide good enough 5.1 surround. It will go soon for a new 7.1, I am just waiting a bit for the price to go down.
