    Yep, as the others have mentioned, you must pay for the monthly, prepaid, or lifetime plan with TiVo in order for the DVR box to function whatsoever. TiVo will function without a cable box and just with basic cable. In fact, it's generally used to replace cable boxes. I have a TiVo Series3 (the similar equivalent of the TiVo HD and XL DVRs), and I just use CableCards to "simulate" all the normal cable box functions. With the exception of OnDemand from my cable provider, it replicates everything perfectly - just with the enhanced TiVo interface and dual tuners.

I checked out tivo before I went with dvr service from my local cable company. You must purchase the box and the monthly subscription if my memory serves me correctly.
