Where can I buy a PSX (DVR?

Should I buy a DVR in a comcast package or buy their basic package and buy my own DVR separately?

  • I'm trying to save money in the long run! ComcastDVR vs. basic comcast (tv, internet, phone) and buy my own DVR

  • Answer:

I agree with Noracat. I've got a friend/coworker who had TiVo, then Comcast's dvr service, then went back to TiVo because Comcast's dvr service wasn't as comprehensive - TiVo is simply capable of doing more. PLUS, TiVo service is cheaper in the long run, even when added to the cost of your cable service. Buying the TiVO box is a big investment up front, as the latest box released by them is $300. But you can still find the older boxes on sale for half that. We recently purchased a Series 2 TiVo box for $150 from Best Buy. The only difference between the two is the newest one lets you record shows in HD, and has a larger storage capacity to accomodate it. But we could care less about HD television - it's freaking television for crying out loud. HD is best suited for blu-ray movies, not a 30 min sitcom or "reality" show. As for the cost for service, we priced AT&T's triple bundle + their dvr service at $150. Comcast's same service is almost $200 after the initial introductory offer expires. We have a local service that provides basic+digital cable, internet, voip phone, then added the TiVo service, and it's only $130 total per month, no intro price or special offers, that's just the price forever.

a few years ago i bought a panasonic DVR and it worked great. but i found it easier to program the comcast DVR so i used that one. if you think you might do a lot of recording of TV shows then it might be easier to get the comcast. but if you use it to copy movies and move your collection around then go with the separate DVR. hope this helps

I don't have a DVR, but I know that I've read several times that the Comcast DVR is not that great, and that TiVO is the best DVR. So if I were you I would NOT get the Comcast DVR, and then look into getting a TiVO DVR instead.
