Answer:
1. First you have to connect your Dish Network to your VCR via composite cables (the cables with yellow, red, and white colors on the ends). You have to connect one end of the cables to the "Input" (If you VCR has more than on input, it may be labeled Line 1 and 2) part of the VCR and the other end to the "Output" part of the Dish Network. 2. Set your VCR/DVD player on VCR mode if it is in DVD player mode. Then find the button on the VCR or your remote control in which you can change channels (such as the + and - buttons) or alternatively the VCR/TV button (it depends on how your VCR model) and press - or + depending on what channel you began with, until LINE 1, LINE 2 shows up. It may appear as L1 or L2 on the screen. 3. Turn on your Dish Network if it is not on. One of these LINE should display on what is on the Dish Network. Insert your blank VHS and hit record. 4. On the remote there should be an option to record in EP or SP. Select SP if you want the highest quality otherwise EP for extended recording time but low quality. There is also a way to schedule when you want your VCR to record, but that's another topic and the procedure varies depending on what brand of VCR you're using.

Youngsters--no sympathy for those who refuse to be ruled by entertainment devices, and the largely duplicitous hype surrounding them. And while buying a device without learning how to use it doesn't necessarily evoke sympathy from me either, mercy is another thing altogether. I assume you've thrown out or misplaced your instruction manual, else why ask, so here goes: This will depend a lot on how you've got your cable connected--if it's a separate box that controls what channel is being fed to the VCR/DVD combo, then you'll likely have to turn it (the box) on and make sure it's going to stay on that channel the whole time you're wanting to record. Besides that, you'll put the tape in the machine, obviously, and look for the "MENU" button or similar on your remote. Every machine is slightly different, but you should be able to scroll around and find "record program" or "timed program" or words to that effect, and from there, the process should be user-friendly enough to allow you to punch in the necessary info without too much confusion and make the infernal device comply. Absolute best way to be sure it will work as intended is to get someone between 20 and 30 to give the setup a once-over. Good luck.
