Does the Roku box have anything that the internet doesn't?
-
it seems like everything on the Roku box, you also have easy access to on the internet. what benefits are there to getting a roku?
-
Answer:
Yes, but it's made for your TV, so you just hook it up to your TV and it's accessible all the time. No need to hook a laptop or similar to your TV. And all the streaming channels are accessible in one place, through a very sleek and responsive interface controlled by a remote. The Roku is a tiny remote-controlled box, about the size of a hockey puck, that connects to your TV and the internet to stream online content. While you can do most of this on your PC, Roku lets you view the content on your large screen TV, just like you're accutomed to, instead of on a small computer screen. I know there are ways to hook up a PC to your TV, but they are cumbersome, messy and inconvenient. Wives usually hate them.

Contentwise, really no. What Roku is about is convenience of a small set top device with an appropriate TV interface, as opposed to using a PC to find and access those services.

Roku is a small box that allows you to stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Pandora music to your TV. Simple as that. Everything mentioned above can be done on the internet, but not on your TV unless you have a Roku or a device like it. If you are interested in learning more about it, I suggest looking here: http://macaltu.blogspot.com/2013/06/roku-3-vs-vizio-co-star-vs-apple-tv.html This is where I first learned about it.

Some clarification is needed. Roku is essentially a very small, specialized computer that only knows how to access Netflix, HuluPlus, YouTube and other video websites on the internet. Think of it this way: If your regular computer is a stove, then Roku is a toaster. You COULD make toast with a stove...but it's much easier to use the toaster. Likewise, you CAN use your PC to access Netflix or other video sites, and display them on your TV but it's a lot easier with the Roku. Of course there is a lot more stuff available on the internet than just Netflix, HuluPlus, Youtube, etc. but Roku can't access it. Roku does not have a regular web browser on it, nor does it have other, non-internet applications on it. So Roku can't do your taxes or help you write a letter to your favorite Aunt. Likewise, you wouldn't use your toaster to make spaghetti & meatballs or bake a cake. So if you have a Netflix or other account on a video site that Roku supports and want to be able to watch on a TV then a Roku is an easy way to accomplish this. Otherwise, it's like buying a popcorn maker when you hate popcorn...
