She has one of the DVD combo TiVos. They integrate DVD playback into the TiVo interface. With a seaprate DVD player, the best you can do is just buffer it through the DVR process.

As far as I know, that isn't a standard feature of Tivo. Tivo offers streaming from Netflix and some other sources, and also offers Video On Demand - perhaps that's what you saw? There is nothing on Tivo's website about connecting a DVD player and having the movie show up on in the Now PLaying list.
