    When you want to connect pcs at your work place or at home you generally use a wireless or an ethernet cable for wired connection through a router. a router can support at most 4 connections. if you are using a wireless connection then you need to have a wireless card to identify your router. you should also check that whether you are putting the right encryption keyword in the box provided. Make the TCP/IP settings of your router to automatic so that your don't have to do them manually. and keep it in ur mind that your cannot use a hub or a switch without a router. I think this will help to resolve your problem.

If this is wireless you need to use the wireless card utility to find your router, set matching encryption and connect. For wired, just plugging it into the router should get it to connect. You can NOT use a hub or switch without a router! Check that the tcp/ip properties of the network connection are all set to automatic.

You said you did have an internet connection, but not anymore. How were you sharing the connection? A router is not the only means of sharing an internet connection. You can also use a hub or a switch. Routers do not only have four ports also. Only on some models.
