get a crossover cable. connect the cable while both pcs are off or restart both when you are done connecting so that their IP addresses are correct. This only applies if you disconnected one from a router or modem first as it will still have the IP address settings from those devices until you reboot.

There is a special cable which reverses a few of the wires in the cable that allow you to connect two computers and in effect create a "mini-network" between the two systems. It is called a "crossover" cable. You can find them at most computer/electronic stores in the cable section.

if you want to be able to see and do things on the other computer you can use a program called pcanywere and you will be connected as long as they have a Internet connection

Hey. You can easly connect to computers to each other using a cat5 cable. If you are file transferring you need to enable file sharing on one of the computer(s). (See http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/winxpnetworking/ht/winxpsfs.htm ) Once that is done with the other computer you need to navigate to \\computernamehere once done loading you should see what ever you enabled to share. You need to click and drag to or from that folder. Have fun!
