Answer:
If you're behind a router I'm not sure if you can get your IP address from the CMD prompt. Why? Because your computer is giving you the IP address it has, which is the one the router gave it. The router in turn has the IP address you're looking for and to get that you need to do something like whatismyip.com.

If you connect your machine direct to modem you will get your real external IP address via cmd. When you connect your machine via router then you will always get your internal or router IP address. You can try to visit http://www.ipaddresslocation.org and http://www.find-ip-address.org and use their free give javascript localy. It will show you your external IP address each time.

It's a very common problem & there is a simple way around it. Register with a free dynamic DNS system like www.noip.com You create an account and download their auto-update gadget. As part of the setup, you get a unique URL, eg. edward.noip.com (but obviously it's got to be one that is not in use yet). Every few minutes the update tool checks your public IP and updates the noip dns. You can then access you machine using 'your' URL so you don't have to bother about looking up the IP address. There are a few companies about that do this, some are free & others charge a small amount. Google 'dynamic dns' for more info.

try this "cmd /k ipconfig /all" without quotes, but for the record, linux is great at this sort of stuff, (probably better than mac)
