    I can only give you my personal experience as a law student. Traditionally barristers earn a lot more than solicitors as they have gone through more training and can take on the higher-end cases whereas solicitors cannot in the criminal courts. However, recent increases in the compensation culture, which of course is dealt with in the civil courts, means that solicitors are taking on more and more lucrative commissions and thus earning a lot more previously. The personal accident industry is becoming a lot more lucrative than criminal law, and it tends to be solicitors that specialise in the former field, which is probably where you are getting your statistics from.
