Places to visit in and around Salzburg, Austria? Tips?

    Be sure to take a guided bus tour of the city - they're available in a variety of languages. Visit the Schloss - you'll get a lovely view of the city. Not too far from Salzburg is Hallstatt - a MUST-SEE. Explore on foot -it's just a small town, but charming. Visit the salt mines - you can actually go underground. Use the trains if you can. They're a great way to get around. (If you plan to use them a lot, look into EurailPass BEFORE you go.) Alternatively, the Post Bus will take you where you want to go, but not as quickly. If you get to Linz, consider a cruise on the Danube to Vienna or beyond. If you'd like to make a side trip, check with local travel agents while you're there. Bigger firms sometimes run their own inexpensive one-day bus trips into the Czech Republic. WELL WORTH doing - but, be VERY security conscious as pick-pockets are notorious. You might visit Budweis (the birthplace of the original Budweiser Beer) or Grumow (a beautiful historic town). If you have contacts over there, ask them to pass along information about any upcoming "werbe fahrts". They're CHEAP one-day trips to popular tourist spots - the only catch is you have to sit through a 1-2 hour presentation (often at a banquet hall or factory store) similar to a live infomercial. Usually a meal is provided and sometimes the products are even worthwhile. It can be something interesting to do for about $10. I once visited Grossglockner (the highest peak in the Austrian Alps) on such a trip and the lunch we were served was pretty good too. These opportunities are usually offered via flyers distributed in the mail.

Salzburg has plenty. I recommend you stay there and go to the tourist office. They have plenty of trips to include Mozart tours, Sound of Music Tours, Castle tours, Ice Caves, Salt Mines, The Eagles Nest. A must visit is the Augustiner Brewery. The best beer in the world. PERIOD. Oh and see about a salzburg card that gets you on the tours for cheaper... I just returned from a long weekend in Salzburg on Monday night. It was wonderful and I'm certain you will thoroughly enjoy yourself. The weather at the moment is scorching so pack lots of shorts! It was 32 degrees most of the time!! The things I enjoyed most were Hangar 7 (a must for car/plane enthusiasts) it is filled with some of the wonderful possessions of 'Mr Red Bull' all housed in an incredible modern glass dome! The Ice Cave by Werfen was incredible but about a 40min drive outside Salzburg and then a strenuous hike up the mountain, a cable car ride and another hike to the mouth of the worlds largest ice cave which contains 400 steps - so not for the feint hearted or very unfit!! But it was worth it as the cave contains something incredibly unspoilt and beautiful that you will rarely get the opportunity to see again. The boat trip on Wolfgangsee followed by the train ride up the Schafberg was another great day out. The views are breathtaking. There are also a number of breweries that opperate tours in the vicinity that are very interesting. Of course not forgetting the wonderful city of Salzburg itself, we did not have time to visit the castle, go on the amadeus boat ride or many of the museums. But I'm certain we will visit again!! From a transport point of view there are excellent trolley bus services in and out of the city. If you fancy a treat why not have a ride on a horse drawn cart? PS - The football seemed to be decending on the city as we were leaving, if you are not a football fan it may be better to stay out of the city centre itself. PPS - If you have any guided tours in the city ask for Heidi, she is brilliant!! Have a wonderful time!!

Go to Vienna; you need only three hours and the city is beautifully. The public transportation in Salzburg is not he best. If you want to go to one of the lakes that are located around Salzburg, you probably would need a car to get there. Salzburg is very beautiful city...but around Salzburg......you should try Fuschlamsee or Hof dei Salzburg if you are a romantic at heart.

Hi I am from Salzburg, Austria. It is a beautiful place! I recommend the Sound of music tour. Or even the tour around the castle of Salzburg. Just visit a travel site. They should have hundreds of different things to do. I am going their in July. Good luck and best travels!
