Your printer underlays colour to print black. The black you have in your printer is not a true black, it does need to be darkened and sharpened using addition colours. You need to replace the cartridges if you wish to print.

I have an HP business inkjet 1100 an even if you change the options to b & w only it still will not print unless you have all the color cartridges installed correctly and they are full of ink. That's just the way it is... I hate it.

Depending on the model, some printers won't print unless they have the full compliment of ink.
