Confused about a usb cable?

USB cable... question, confused?

  • Hi, I need to buy a printer and it says I need to buy a usb cable with it. Can I just use my camera usb cable?

  • Answer:

Probably not. USB cables come in a large variety of sizes and you need one that will fit the printer. Most printers come with their own but you could also look at getting a wireless one instead.

Printers use an A/B USB cable.

It is basic 2.0 USB cable. It can be bought locally. At times the dollar store will sell them. Shop around for the cheapest price. Not necessary to pay over a few dollars the cheaper ones work as well as the expensive ones Click link below for a picture of the usb cable

you can buy printer usb cables in many dollar stores.

That's doubtful, as most cameras tend to use micro or mini USB whereas printers use what's called a high speed USB cable. They're relatively inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Hi-Speed-USB-Cable-Feet/dp/B00004Z5M1

Every printer I purchased (new) comes with a USB cable. You can use your camera cable IF the physical connectors match. That will be your limiting factor. The most common USB cables have an A/A or A/B connections (just letter designations between flat and square styles). My camera has a miniature USB to flat cable. My external hard drive has a different style than those. But the pinouts are standard within the same connector design, just the physical designs are different.
