You would need to go into the Power Options and reset the options so that when you close the lid it does not go into sleep or hibernation. Then you would be able to close the lid without the laptop going down. (Poster one is correct that "sleep" is the default setting. But you can change it. Note that you will also need to add an external keyboard and mouse if you intend to run the laptop with the lid closed.

If the laptop is closed why do you need display on? I use my laptop with my HDTV. A much nicer idea if you have HDMI. This allows you to use the laptop as an entertainment center also.

If you turn off standby mode when the lid is closed, you can close the lid, and keep using the external monitor instead...
