How does an LCD display work?

If my lcd display doesn't work on my laptop can a regular monitor take its place?

    Yes, The best way to connect it is when the computer is OFF. If it doesn't work when you turn on the computer than there are blue (might be another color) buttons and function keys on the laptop. One switches between LCD and CRT screen. You might have to check your owners manual.

Yeah if you have a VGA port or Dvi port (which you should).. Try it out..

As long as your laptop has a VGA port on it, then yes. If this second monitor doesn't work, then you probably have a video card or motherboard issue.
