    Here is hardware method, buy a PC to TV hardware. play it on computer send picture/sound to DVD recorder. Make a DVD. Copy the DVD to your computer. If you want make the file smaller just use window media movie maker. What protection? it is all gone.

It is very easy if you know how. You just need the right software. You need a good DVD ripper. DVDFab is good. Then you can playback your movie with PowerDVD, WinDVD, VLC, Windows media player or something of the sort. If you want to make things even more convenient, convert your movies to DivX. a DivX (avi) movie takes up 5 times less space than a DVD movie.
