What is Disk Defragmenter?

When windows writes and modifies files, they tend to become split up into smaller pieces (or fragments) and spread out across the hard drive platter. This is called fragmentation. It is a consequence of how FAT/NFTS (the windows file systems) handles files and cannot be avoided in any version of windows. File fragmentation causes the drive to slow down since it takes longer to read a fragmented file compared to a contiguous one. Apart from reducing overall system performance, it also makes the drive work harder thereby reducing it's life. As far as the drive is concerned, it is a performance-sapping disease. A defragmenter is a software that rearranges these fragments of the files into one contiguous file. This makes the system run faster and also improves the life of the drive, meaning you can probably save some money on premature hardware replacement costs. Until recently, defragmenters were manual or scheduled i.e. one had to waste a lot of time running defrags regularly and waiting for them to end before being able to use the computer .This could be troublesome if you had large or multiple harddrives on a PC. A defragmenter can work only if the files are fragmented, so it really doesnt do anything at all if there is no fragmentation and since there is no actual physical contact with the drives, there is no risk. Defragmenting does not delete anything.If the power gets cut during the defrag, it may be dangerous. Besides that there is no risk. But hardly anyone uses a PC without power backup these days.

it places all your files in block rather than the way it is formed on your computor imagine a disc with lines around it and 1 of your files is on the disc but is spread all over it the defrag brings it all together, maybe do it once a month to keep on top of it but do it as well as your virus scans and such
