  • Answer:

Mississippi would be great. You'd learn much more about American culture in small towns than in the big cities. I went to college in Columbus for a couple of years and enjoyed it very much. However, be aware that most exchange programs don't give you a choice of state. Good luck and enjoy your exchange.

Hi. I grew up in Texas, and was a college exchange student in Germany. Mississippi will be very different from Hamburg. There are not any large urban centers in Mississippi. I'd recommend watching a movie called "Mai's America" about a Vietnamese exchange student who went to the south. Honestly, I think you'd be happier in a more urban setting where you could experience southern culture yet have broader opportunities. I might suggest Atlanta, Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina, Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Richmond, Virginia, Nashville, Tennessee or even New Orleans. If you want to go farther west, any of the large urban areas in Texas -- Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, would give you a feeling of southwestern culture. Wherever you go, make the most of it for the time you have.
