Gosh yes, I went to Italy without a word of Italian and was being complimented on my good English after three months! Go for total immersion (no English at all), study grammar and vocab every day (take the books with you), read books in that language and at the end of a year you will be bilingual.

it is possible, my aunty went to Japan for a year for exchange and she didn't even know how to say hi. She came back after a year and was speaking so fluently, and they have 2!!!! languages.
