How to go to college in England?

I want to go to college in England, I'm from Tennessee and wondering how British will act towards me?

  • since i do have such a stronger southern accent. and also on average how much cash a typical college student goes through a month in London?

  • Answer:

You thihk your accent will make a difference? We have so many accents here, they can change within a mile or so. Money - well you need to think about accomodation, after that travel, food and expenses. It depends what you want to do with your free time, opera tickets are £30 - £300, but you can see comedy in a pub for the price of a drink.

Most english people won't even care about the accent at university. since people come from all over the world. As for money. University fees for international students are about £30,000 a year, plus £4,000 a year accomodation (including taxes and gas etc) plus about £50 a week for food, plus £100 a week for going out and general household stuff.... London is more expensive than anywhere else in the UK, so once you move out of the halls of residence after the first year, you might need more money, as property in london is expensive and you might need to stay outside the city more and get buses etc.

Well I'm English from a long line of Londoners and can tell you that as many people have said, you will be one foreign person amongst tens of thousands in London. If it were elsewhere in England you may be the cause of some curiosity, but largely not animosity, but in London no-one cares I'm afraid as it is a highly cosmopolitan culture and environment. Also it is a question of what you mean by "college". If you are referring to University then it is fine. If you are a 16 year old wanting to go to a UK college which offers courses to 16-19 year olds, then you may find this difficult. Colleges in London are largely in the suburbs which have their own cultures, but Universities are extremely cosmopolitan. Regarding costs, London and Cambridge are the most expensive parts of the UK and you will find accommodation is extremely expensive as is food and above all your social life. There must be a website on living costs in different parts of the world, or otherwise contact the College itself. Why do you want to go to London or the UK in general? I would not suggest you go to do a qualification for students aged 16-19 in the UK. The behaviour of many students of this age group in the UK is extremely bad and this affects the quality of the education you will be paying for. Universities however are much searched after in the UK.

Hi - just to repeat what some of the others have said - your accent will be one of the thousands of different accents in London and you'll be surprised at how little attention the majority of people pay to your accent. There's almost 100,000 international students in London and over 300 languages spoken here so we're used to different accents. 25% of all people living in London are from another country. Plus wait until you hear a true 'cockney' accent from a Londoner - you'll see than that you're not the only with an 'exotic' accent! Living costs in London: the UK Border Agency recommends you have at least £800 per month of study to cover living costs: http://www.studylondon.ac.uk/student_advisor/104_living_costs Hope that helps, Simon http://www.studylondon.ac.uk

From my experience of University, American are in the hot spot of the social scene. Course you're from South but it'll be difficult for people to pick up on unless you mention it to them. Most will detect a slight hint of the South, but would never go as far as insults, maybe a joke every now and again. It's University. Although there are a wide range of people at University the local Londoners, known as "Cockney's", are known for their banter (jokes and humorous talk), so don't feel insulted if it's brought up a little, it's part of the culture. A university student in London gets the highest student finance (at least that's the case for British students, unsure for foreign students but 99% sure it'd be the same if not more) but London is VERY expensive, so be sure to budget mate! Like I said, always in the social scene, and London is a busy, expensive social scene but is probably the best in the country, and I'm saying that as a North Westerner! Hope you come to London and enjoy our culture, and hope this information helped!

I'm not sure about the money, sorry. But when it comes to your accent, some people will make fun of you. I think it's more about how ignorant people act towards the British or how you act when you go to England for college. There are people in England who are quite blunt about some things but the longer you spend time in England, the thick accent you have may in fact become less strong. I've known people who were from the deep deep south and over the course of a few years, their accent became have as strong as it was. I think your main problem will be annunciation with certain words - because of course some English people think all Americans are ignorant and talk strangely, not just those from the south.
