Why won't computer recognize usb device?

How do you make your computer recognize a new USB memory device?

  • i have a memory device that i plugged in the computer but a messege pops up on the bottom that saids it doesnt reconize it. how can i make it work. the memory device is new.

    Windows XP or Vista or OSX should auto recognize a USB memory device. Otherwise, go to the manufacturer;s site and see if they have drivers. Or, the device could be defective.

LOL check out the brains on the first poster. prime example of why you should never put too much trust in people on Y!A. it would have been easier for us to answer if you said what the device was. some devices install drivers automatically. some need driver discs or drivers from the site. and also, try clicking the start menu > right click my computer > properties > hardware > device manager. see which device is not properly installed or not recognized and update it. if it doesnt work, you need to dl the driver from the site.

It may not be formatted. Open my computer and see if the device shows there. Left click on it to open properties and choose format.

by rights it should recognise it automatically, is you USB port ok and working? try another port??, sometimes they get a bit of dust in them, which could hinder you.You should get an icon down on your toolbar n"new USB device found", just to left of clock

Go to > My Computer, right click and refresh. No sense to shut your WHOLE pc down to recognize an flash device... Do what other dude said and research your manufacture....
