Why do so many people become vegetarian and eat a bunch of fish? You do realise you are jeopordizing?

As one pointed out,you have to explain the contradiction to your statement of the healthy conditions of those societies (Mediterranean, South Pacific/Pacific Islander, Okinawan, etc) who eat enormous amounts of seafood. Not to mention the fact that that people don't become vegetarians to eat fish. "...I am an Enviro Biology Major.." means you are still school and still studying so I suggest you concentrate on that and study some more (it's "etc" not "ect" so may I also suggest some basic English classes?) and leave the ranting to the "experts" who prowl these pages... Do you realize that you are jeopardizing? your being taken seriously if you continue posting generalizations like this?

Umm ... I hate to have to tell you this, but there's a major flaw in your question (I mean besides the incorrect spelling of 'jeopardising', 'etc.' and 'which'). Vegetarians DO NOT eat fish! None! Not even one! Fish are animals, and vegetarians don't eat animals. Perhaps you meant veterinarians or Vietnamese or veterans or Vogons or vagabonds or viscounts or Victorians or viceroys or vicars or vintners or valets or vandals or vagrants or virgins or vivisectionists or voodooists or vultures or something else beginning with V, because you sure as hell didn't mean vegetarians (nor vegans for that matter). Go back to school and learn what a vegetarian is, then come back and post another daft pointless question.

Depending on the fish and the source, maybe. But not all fish have that concern. And fish are essential for proteins and essential fatty acids and omega-3s. Didn't take health science, did you?

True vegetarians don't eat fish or any other animal. I don't understand the purpose of eating fish and calling yourself a "vegetarian." Funny, we have a bunch of people here trying to convince us vegetarians that fish are vegetables. Then someone else comes to this forum and scolds vegetarians for eating fish.

The Mediterranean diet is thought to be one of the healthiest diets in the world. In the Med countries they consume high quantities of fish. If it is correct what you are saying, why is the life expectancy higher here than the rest of Europe!!

They don't become vegetarian, they just call themselves that because they want too seem cool and in some new cool clique because corporate culture has gotten too them and they have these false standards of friends and "cool". You can never be vegetarian and eat any kind of meat and that has and always will include fish and shellfish. Just a side note too Jugalo: Too put it nicely you are a moron and in the wrong section this is a section for vegetarians and vegans and those looking to become them not for lame-wads like yourself.

A lot of people start eating fish because it supposedly provides the protein that is so obviously missing from the diet when one becomes a vegetarian. Generally speaking, the majority of vegetarians are ignorant of proper diet techniques in the first place so it shouldn't surprise you that they have overlooked this fact as well. Although...I haven't heard this before, and I'm surrounded by environmental bio majors. What is your source material?
