Well... With out boring you with muscle car history, transmissions didn't utilize as many gears as we now have. We now have 5, 6, and 8 speeds to choose from. What we rely on to shift all those gears effortlessly is this ingenious invention called synchros that reside in your transmission. Way back in the day without a synchronized transmission you would have to activate the clutch to shift, then activate the clutch again to engage the gear. Yes, Fast And Furious has entertainment value but stunts, physics defying myths, car jumps, etc are best left in the movies. Nuff Said.
