Depends on who you want to do it. For one time needs on a smaller scale, it is usually more cost efficient to have a commercial place do it. Check your local camera stores to get prices. If you do it yourself, you will need 1) Audio/Video capture card. Some computers already have this ability so check your documentation. 2) DVD Writer (not just a reader) 3) A/V Import Software 4) A/V editting software. This can be Windows Movie Maker (Free) or other software that gets to be more in depth and costs money. 5) DVD Authoring software like Nero. Process Hook up VCR to Computer via the AV inputs (RCA connectors usually) Use the capturing software to read VCR data into digital format (usually AVI or MPEG4). Use the AV authoring software to edit - do wipes, delete scenes, as captions and titles etc Use the DVD authoring software to write data to DVD Play DVD on DVD Player There is a lot of How To for each step you need to take. This is just the over view.

If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder… You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

http://www.kozenrufu.com/Jameskan/technology.htm Here is one way to do it. This is a whole technology and I am just in the intermediate level of it, there is much more hardware that you can buy, you can spend thousands of dollars getting detailers and other equipment to correct the deterioration that occurs with VHS over the years. There is no simple or cheap answer for you, even if your parents have stored the tapes carefully (unless they are vacuum sealed). Air and the moisture in it, and heat degrade images and sound captured on to tape. Plus in order to transfer to DVD, you need to understand you are changing from a forgiving medium (analog) to a precise, unforgiving one (digital). There are mechanical errors that occur when recording to VHS because of the fact that the tape moves around over a head and captures an analog image. In order to not magnify this error you need to resync the two analog images that make up a frame in analog. This equipment is called a Time Base Corrector. It resyncs the images and helps to stop or elimnate any motion up and down or side to side that occurs with old tapes. Best to have two of them (TBCs), one on the VHS player and a standalone one, that's what I have. But unless you're going into the business, you're not going to want to spend a couple of thousand dollars for this kind of equipment, but if you just buy a capture card ($60) and a cheap VHS player, you will probably not be happy with the quality of your images. Might be best to invest in a machine where you have two drives, one for VHS and the other for the DVD writer. Research carefully and make sure it gets good reviews.
