Answer:
is this file a personal ancestry file?! it seems like it was made with some software that helps you log your ancestry. if it is, you are gonna halft to buy the software to open it. Look here: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ftc/messages/283.html It kinda explains the file you have. If its' not, it may be some sort of trick people use to hide pic files or text. Try to change the extension (start with *.jpg or *.txt) and see what opens it. I really much doubt it is a Postcode Address File which is a database used by uk mail service systems (and that file is not able to be opened that easily cause it's used mainly by uk gov't officials. http://www.psc.gov.uk/royal-mail-standards-and-prices/postcode-address-file.html

The first place to start is http://filext.com/. You can enter the file extension and it will indicate the type of file and/or application required to open the file. The site says that this is a Ensoniq PARIS Audio Format file. It gives http://www.emu.com/ as a reference site, although this doesnt seem to supply much information. You might find this site of more use: http://www.parisfaqs.com/ Google also returns Personal Ancestral File which appears to be used by genealogical software to do family histories. You will need to find out what type of file you have? What sort of file do you expect it to be? An audio file or something else?

A search for "PAF extension" turned up this site. There are several types of files it could be. An audio file that you can play with Winamp. A picture file that you can play with PhotoAnimator. A family tree file for something called FamilySearch. Or an Amiga Finder document. If any of these rings a bell you might still have the software CD; install the software again to run it. I don't know about the other three, but Winamp can be downloaded for free from http://www.winamp.com.

Right
Right click on the file and choose open with. Choose something like notepad to see if it is text. You can check the box that says always open with this program to make it keep the association.

Seems like it could be a "Personal Ancestral File" format. Try going to this website and downloading their software. It may help open the file.

you can open any file in a text editor. Might not be legible, but you will be able to open it.
