Can I get caught and be fined for downloading illegal files from Limewire?
-
Or does the fault lie on the provider or the uploader?

Answer:
You COULD but dont be a sissy. You probably WONT.. omg downloading music.. who cares. If your worried, use peer guardian. Your ISP will probably terminate your internet before you get in any legal trouble. It really isn't a big deal. They mostly stopped fining and just started issuing complaints to peoples providers.

You can most diefentiely get caught for stealing ''illegal files'' and if you do it will be your fault since you know their already illegal.

Yes, you're "technically" stealing the music. My cousin was fined an obscene amount of money (I guess to scare him) and his father settled out of court for over $10k. While I do download from Lime Wire.....I honestly, if I was a record co. exec, I'd be all for it. My product is basically being stolen thus minimizing my profit potential... and there's nothing I can do about it.

Yes, anything you do illegally can get caught. Just buy CD's, not that bad, you can always upload them to your computer so if they get lost or scratched they are always there.

It lies with the uploader AND the downloader.
yes. Limewire, Gnutella, Napster... all the big ones are well known and monitored by the respective agencies (RIAA, MPAA etc) I recommend using something like IMEEM or getting it privately from someone. IMEEM is legal so if it's copyrighted, it'll block it but there are tons of legal versions. either that or use bit-torrent. technically the fault lies on both ends... the provider is publicly distributing and you are knowingly receiving

by downloading them you are digitally stealing the songs so the fault is on you (even more so since by agreeing to the limewire user agreement you are saying you won't use it for downloading copyrighted material) and limewire is at no fault because it is a p2p program so they are not responsible for what its users upload and download. as for getting caught: possible but very unlikely. as long as you aren't sharing a ton of songs you should remain under the radar

You could get caught and taken to court and sent to jail even for downloaders. its the risk you run you can make it hard to be caught though with extra software
They do not find people by their downloads They scan peoples computers for copyrighted files being shared and if they find any they will try to find you through your ISP. Don't share anything and you're safe. Note that by default most programs will share all of the files you've downloaded with it. Just move the file to a different folder.

Lol, it is possible but millions of people do it so you have a 99.99% chance of not being caught.
