Like you, I am a self-taught programmer. I found an entry-level programming job with a company that not only wanted a programmer but one who understood the technology behind the software. For me, it was surveying software and I had a surveying background. I was paid very little relative to the other programmers but then again I was in learning mode and for the first 4 months I worked 6 days a week for at least 12 hours a day to produce anything so they wouldn't fire me (at least that's what I thought would happen but they really weren't expecting to much production given my lack of experience). I stuck it out there for 2 years before moving on to a 'real' programmer paying job having all that experience to back me up and something to show a future employer. Usually, you have to change jobs to move up in position and pay. Stop looking at jobs that require experience. Where I live, I often see people looking for 'entry level' programmers, which is a nice way to say someone they can mold and not pay much :) Be prepared to live like a poor person for a while until you pay your dues. You may actually have an advantage with the low-paying jobs as people with degrees may not accept something 'beneath' their expectations (after all, they went to school for years to get ready compared to you!). Mobile apps are an excellent start but you might try your hand had .NET or Java as well as Javascript and something like PHP or Perl to be more rounded out.

Hey, That is a tough situation, we all gotta start somewhere. Here is my suggestion, release an ipad app if you have not already. Also, create a website where you offer web design services. This way you can go to potential employers and point to your ipad app and you can point to your clients websites(that you will design) to show your experience. Thanks

It's very hard to get any serious job without experience. I'd suggest some volunteering/ begging companies to give you something to do then giving you a reference if you do it well. Some small freelance work can be useful, simple website design for idiots can at least show that you know what you're doing. I really don't think any company will hire you based on your word. EDIT: Listen to that idea about an Ipad App, (god I'm so out of date) that's a brilliant idea and a million times better than web design. Not that you shouldn't still do web design to show experience

Try to get referral from your past employer/clients. You can expand your knowledge at programming by studying other languages like css, php, pearl, drupal, java, lamp and etc. There are lots of online tools and video tutorials you can study for each programming language. You just need to do a lot of research.

start a business - and hire yourself as a programmer.

Do what I did with brain surgery, rock up and ask if you can have a go, what could possibly go wrong. A knowledge of HTML and C++ won't cut it as a programmer.

Some kind of apprenticeship ?

If you are confident just apply for the job and tell them that you are self taught and feel that you are confident that you are the right person for the job. push yourself even if you have to write to them Good Luck
