  • Answer:

As in "The Real Secret to Computer Geekdom", the real traits necessary to become a great programmer are patience, confidence, curiosity, memory, and blogging. Just one opinion. Intelligence helps, but really, we can make ourselves more intelligent just by stimulating our minds consistently.

The best way to learn computer programming is to have constant access with people that have been in your shoes. I suggest you find a community that will give you support when you need it. I don't know how long it will take. It depends on how smart you are :), but I can guarantee you will learn faster then trying to cram your brain with code and programming books! I'll leave just one site as a source that specifically helps Young and New programmers but you can find plenty of Forums out there with a simple google search

Anybody who has patience and time can learn something. You have to have a logistical sense for computer languages. I know VB, VBA, Javascript. I did part time courses and bought books. I also did some years on internet forums providing help. This was a good way to work out problems by seeing other peoples need for programs. Some people will never know about computers because their aptitutde lies elsewhere, probably as a model, or in sales, or ditch-digging. The time you spend is the rest of your life. Programming just can't be learnt like talking and reading. If you stop for a couple of months, a lot of what you learnt is compressed into the dark spaces of your brain and may take several weeks to extract.

You would need to go to school to master any programming language. The best way is simply go to school and take computer science courses and try and get a job in that field with a low pay to work on different projects. My good friend is a programmer and in my opinion one of the best, he breathes it and lives it.
