How long does it take to learn a back handspring and what is involved?

  • I'll be a freshman and I start gymnastics Monday, i'm hoping to have a back handspring and become more flexible.

  • Answer:

First thing it takes is the faith in yourself that you can get to your hands and not your head. That my friend is thw whole key to a back handspring. They're actually fairly easy to do.

I agree w/both ppl. above me....but i want to add that U must definitely have NO FEAR whatsoever... & keep in mind when u land on your hands that u shouldn't lock ur arms because u need a slight bend in order 2 spring back to your feet....& u must not bend them 2 far cuz U don't want ur weight 2 come down 2 hard on extremely bent arms cuz you'll hurt ya head.... it's not hard, jus stay confident, persistent, & make sure u don't wear out ur wrist...if u feel pain or if they feel weaker than they did b4 u started gymnastics then tell your coach immediately & rest your wrist

In all honesty, if u have good arm strength (and no fear) you can learn a backhandspring in a couple weeks. But, it takes a long time to master a graceful backhandspring with legs together, toes pointed, arms straight, and a perfectly straight body position. And in my opinion I have a lot more respect for people learning the proper way to do a backhandspring than those who just learn it really fast so they can say they can do it, but it doesn't look very good. No frog legs! (bent legs) What is involved is lots of practice, dedication, patience, stretching and trust. Always trust ur spotters and never say "I can't". "I can't" gets u no where but "I will try" has done wonders. Alright now get out there and kick some gymnastic butt! Sorry that was so long!!!

First you much learn to do a back bend. then a back walk over. After you have mastered the back walk over, try starting the move with your feet together. Then start jumping onto your hands. good luck
