Like anna444 said, most tv's automatically adjust to the signal that is being sent to your tv. for instance Call of Duty:Black ops can send up to a 1080p signal while Killzone 2 can only send up to a 1080i signal. The difference between them is that 1080i gives an interlaced pictures which are horizontal lines that make up the picture. 1080p are just consecutive pictures that make up the movement of the video.
