This is a common problem these days. Many DVD/VCR units do NOT have analog cable TV tuners built in. Like what the other answerer said, what you need is something with a TV tuner like a cable box or VCR. Yes it is a pain. You will then take the red/white/yellow output of the cable box to the red/white/yellow input of your DVD/VCR. Another option is to take the new unit back for one that has a tuner. Look for the cable TV connector on the back at the store.
