How do I avoid getting cramps while swimming?! ?

  • EVERY time during swim class at school, I get cramps in my calf. Sometimes I get them when I'm right in the middle of the pool, so I splash around in pain and it's embarassing. How do ...show more

  • Answer:

As soon as I read this I knew exactly how you feel. Leg cramps are painful. If you are wearing any fins for practices there is a way to alleviate a cramp by using the fin to help. Simply grasp the fin tip and pull it towar your torso. When a muscle cramps it bunches up toward the torso. Massaging the muscle to help alleviate an immediate cramp should be done in the direction away from the torso (from the torso out). Bananas and Avacados are both good sources for potassium which will help prevent or reduce cramping in the extremities. As mentioned by others hydrate yourself and stretch before getting in the water.

OK, this is an easy one. Strech before swimming. That all. FYI you can get cramps in your sleep because of Dehydration.

after you finish a set or swim, breathe through your nose, and out your mouth (breathe hard). Eat a banana 15 minutes before you swim should help, too.
