I have a Nikon D60. How do I take photos where the close-up subject and background are both in focus?

Answer:
Position the subject as close as possible to the background. Make sure you are farther from the subject than the subject is to the background. Set camera to aperture priority at lowest workable ISO. Set aperture to f/8. If the background is still blurred, set to higher f/number.

Other answers
Use a small aperture (that's the big f/stop number). Works best with wider focal lengths rather than longer lenses. Do yourself a favour and read a couple of books about photography - it helps so much to understand the basic principles.

Understanding both f/stop and depth of field is important for your answer. Simple answer, f/stop at say f/12 or higher with plenty of light - say out doors.
