  I saw all your questions about light meters and will look for the results when they come, but I just wanted to share what one mentor told me when i wanted to get one - he said it isn't worth it to buy one if you have a meter in-camera. This man talked me out of a purchase I would have made at his business, and I was hot to buy one. So, I use my in-camera meter. I'll be interested in seeing what response you get, I still seem to think I may need one. Edit: You can use your in-camera light meter to get readings on individual areas, I do it all the time. I get a reading off a mid-tone value, or meter the lightest and darkest value and change the camera setting to accommodate a median reading. And for landscape, I take a reading off an area that is a medium value and lock the setting. And my mentor was a serious photographer - a former National Geographic photographer. They can't always use meters when they are out in the field. And yes, it is most advantageous to get a reading of light hitting the subject, but that's not always possible if you are a distance from the subject. Light meters work best in controlled photo shoot situations - like in a studio or on location when shooting people - say in fashion photography or family portraits outdoors.
