Good coffee and bad coffee?

I have had this question for quite a long time. Since I'm neither an epicurian nor an avid coffee drinker, I can't really distinguish a good coffee from bad. Now, I've ...show more

Answer:
Oh...coffee is coffee. Black is black. You'll taste a difference in coffee you brew at home for yourself vs coffee from a gas station when it's on it's 9th brewing. I recommend Starbucks for blended drinks. It's kinda nuts to spend so much for regular coffee from the sbucks if you can't taste the difference. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice other than the coffee I get from Denny's tastes the same as what I make at home yet, when I want a latte with espresso, I roll to the sbucks. :o) If you want to really get into it, I know that the more expensive tends to be the better tasting....

How strange, I can tell the difference between good and bad coffee, I love coffee. I live in seattle and we are very coffee orientated here. Tell your dad that your palate might not be as sophisticated as his and his use of the word inconsiderate does not make sense. He is inconsiderate for berating you. Your own sense of taste will tell you what you like. Think of all the money you will save by buying the less expensive coffee. If it all taste the same to you who cares ..

Maybe instead of messing around with different brands you should alter your grind and roast, or even extraction method. Personally I like a dark espresso grind made in an espresso machine or French press. You really can tell the difference in with a french press of the flavor of the coffee. A breakfast or house blend is pretty light roast, a french roast is very dark roast. the espresso grind is very fine and the coarse grind is more for the old percolators. I go with either a medium-fine grind or espresso, you get more surface area of the bean for coffee. and then get an inexpensive french press or at least a decent drip. a bad drip machine ruins any coffee. You can find all types of roast in Trader Joes and you grind your own so you can dial in your grind.

I'm not a coffee expert, but what I've found is that, yeah, you tend to get a lot of so so coffee that's hard to tell apart. But one day you will get hold of a really good cup of coffee, and then you will know the difference. A lot of it's the brand and so on, but there's also preparation apparently. I don't know it's complicated.
