What has become of the Druid Wolfpack of Yellowstone?

  • Since The PBS special, "In the Valley of the Wolves", aired in 2009, what has become of the Druid pack? In 2006, from their new location in an area called Cache Creek, aided by Casanova and #480, the new alpha male, the pack began to rebuild. Both of the pack’s adult females successfully bred, producing eight surviving pups. The Druids pushed back against the Slough Creek pack — which suffered its own losses earlier in the year after a run-in with an unknown pack from the north — and reclaimed their traditional territory in the Soda Butte and Lamar Valleys; six pups were born there in 2007. Because I don't have the opportunity to follow every detail of what's happening with the wolves in Yellowstone I reached out to friend a Yellowstone Wolf Guide Nathan Varley (http://wolftracker.com ). Pictured below: Here's what happened and what's happening now according to a man that is in the park almost daily and has spent more time watching these wolves than all but a handful of people on the planet: So, the Druid Peak pack unwound and came apart in the winter 2010. They were victims of the decline in the overall population marked by malnutrition, diseases, and parasites.  Many packs were stricken, some made it through and some did not.  The Druids were down to a core group of young females, all of which died by the end of that winter.  New packs have since carried on and the decline is over and the population is more stable now. Of course, many descendants of the Druids live on in other packs, so the line in a sense is still strong in Yellowstone. As Oliver mentioned, the Druid pack was decimated due to disease (mange). The Lamar Canyon pack now rules the roost in Lamar valley. And if I remember correctly, the current Alpha of Lamar pack is the grand daughter of the famous wolf #42 from the Druid pack. The story of the Druids is fascinating and when I first heard it, I got goosebumps hearing the tales of intrigue, loyalty and betrayal among wolves. Beats any contrived soap opera we could come up with.
