Countries that require a passport renewal within 6 months?

Do I need to renew my passport if it expires within 2 months of my trip to Europe?

  • The trip is in early July, my US passport expires in September - will be traveling in France, Italy, Switzerland. I have heard that some nations require passports to be valid for 3 months before expiry - is this actually a policy in the countries? The quandary here is that if I renew my passport now, I must submit my current passport - so if it is not renewed in the stated expedited interval (2-3 weeks), then I am stuck with NO passport, as opposed to a passport expiring w/in 2 months of  the travel date.

    As far as I know, unless you have an EU passport, it must have 6 months validity from the date of your return.
