How many Sikh women have been trained in the specialized martial arts of gatka? Do they feel safe due to their skills or have their skills proved useful?
-
Gatka is a specialized form of martial arts accepted in its present form as an integral part of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh. More information on Gatka can be found on the Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatka My question is related to whether Sikh women have traditionally been trained in this martial arts and if it has made a difference to their safety? I ask this because I believe that self defense can be an effective method for protecting women and making them more self reliant in modern times when safety has become a big concern. It is not that I am averse to any form of martial arts for that matter, but I have specifically asked about Gatka to make the question more specific. Any views and suggestions on the utility of Gatka and self defense techniques in general would be well appreciated. It is indeed very strange that no one has even attempted to answer this question, which, in my view, is directly related to women's safety. I had expected a better response but am still waiting.

Quite a lot of Sikh women learn Gatka, I don't know the exact number though. I have seen lot of Gatka performances both in Punjab and Bangalore, where even girls have learnt and performed Gatka. The martial art of Gatka is taught in various Gurdwaras, where even girls are taught this, but it is a matter of personal choice to learn it. It is definitely useful for self-defense, that's why Sikhs are instructed to carry the kirpan with them always. I had once heard from somewhere about two Sikh girls protecting themselves against few rogues with their Kirpans, but I'm not very sure about the authenticity of this news. I found a video about Rashpal Kaur, who participated in Dance India Dance, she is blind but has learnt gatka. Her story is inspiring, do watch these videos (not very great quality videos though):
