Anyone know how to re-wire an old 4 prong type landline telephone to a modern type plug?

  • Answer:

Older phones have 2 wires that are called tip and ring. They are usually red and green. If you open the end of the cable, you should see them. These 2 wires go to the center 2 connector pins on the modern RJ11 plug. You will need a special tool plus the plug to crimp these wires into the plug. Wikipedia has a good article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RJ-11

Yep..you can buy a ready to go RJ11 cable with plug on one end, and the wires or lugs on the other. Just open the phone and connect the two wires to the red and black (ring and tip) connections in the phone. Try Radio Shack, or a similar ('got everything') type electronics store.

all you need are the red and green wires.I don't know if your phone wire is small enough to put on a small plug... you might need to splice some "modern" wire on,or re-wire the phone. One can buy little kits at Radio Shack to put the plugs on the wire,if it is the size of modern phone wires

<>There should be four (4) wires at the plug...red, green, yellow, black. You will only use red & green, disregard the others (cut them off and don't let the bare ends touch each other). The problem is, how will you convert this to a modern modular plug? You could take a modern modular phone line and cut the plug off a few inches from the end. Carefully strip the wires and twist the red to red and green to green (if the modular wires aren't marked, just try it one way and test it in the outlet first) and tape it neatly. The other way is to buy modular plugs and the special tool to wire them (try Radio Shack).
