Depends on how they're encoded. My songs are all 320 kbps mp3s, and I fit around 1400-1500 on my 16GB ipod touch. If you've got 128 or 256 kbps (fairly standard) you'll fit quite a few more.

Depends on compression used. 8GB iPod can hold up to 1600 songs in AAC format at 128kbps. If you use MP3 at 192kbps that number can go up to 1000 songs, depending again on song lenght.
